The wait is over! Pun intended. Last year for Christmas I began to see ads for the weighted blanket and of course I wanted one. Most people ask, “who would want a weighted blanket?” Well a weighted blanket is for those who suffer from anxiety, stress, insomnia or ADHD.
Weighted blankets are marketed as feeling “like a hug.” Some retailers compare it to being swaddled! The blankets are filled with glass beads or pellets. The ideal weight of a weighted blanket should be around 10% of your body weight plus one or two pounds. Most blankets range from 12 pounds to 25 pounds. The price ranges from $69.99 to $200.
I purchased my weighted blanket for $69.99 from Marshall’s and here’s my review.
My weighted blanket is 20 pounds, which is 10% of my body weight. It’s a queen size. My immediate thought was that this thing was heavy! The first night I used it as a comforter on my bed. I was sweating and woke up feeling like I had a weight lifting session at the gym the day before.
Did I sleep any different? Did I feel less anxious or less stressed? Did I notice a difference? As a clinician, I believe that to give a true review of something you must use it for a significant amount of time. With that being said, I gave it a solid 30 days. I’ve used it as a comforter and as a throw while watching TV on the sofa. I did not notice a difference at all. To be honest, I don’t like the blanket at all and here’s why.
- It’s hot! I do suggest turning the A/C up! The blanket that I have feels more like a quilt and would be great in the winter.
- The weight shifted. It felt like bean bags moving around. Some spots were heavier than others.
Honestly, I would have returned if we wouldn’t have thrown away the bag. I’ve researched a few other brands which are higher in cost and claim to not have these issues. I’m not too sure about using these with small kids, the lightest weight being 10 pounds. I guess I’m stuck with a heavy throw.
Have you tried the weighted blanket? What are your thoughts?
